Phuong: The Heart That Kept Us Together

Sitting here, trying to put into words what my sister Phuong meant to me, I suddenly realized something I hadn’t fully understood before: she wasn’t just my sister. She was my classmate, my partner in mischief, and my very best friend.

When we were young, we were inseparable. Every class, every errand, every adventure we did it all together. From Chinese class to English class to Vietnamese school, we rode our bikes side by side, walked home hand in hand, and laughed through the rain-soaked afternoons. I remember tying strings to dragonflies and letting them soar like tiny kites. Looking back, it might seem a little cruel, but we were just children, inventing our own magic. We even climbed over fences and dug up potatoes to make chè—our little world was full of mischief and wonder.

Those memories keep flooding back, warm and bittersweet. I find myself wishing we had more time, more moments to share, more laughter to fill the days.

As we grew older, life took us down different paths. We married, started families, and carried on with our lives. But even then, Phuong never stopped caring for me. She became like a second mother to my girls, nurturing them with the same love she had always shown me. Bringing the family together was her greatest joy—family cruises, camping trips, and countless gatherings, all planned with a heart so big and so giving and never a complaint in sight.

We were so unbelievably lucky to have her in our lives. Her kindness, her warmth, her boundless love—they will continue to live in every one of us. Though she may no longer walk beside us, we will carry her spirit, her laughter, and her love forward. We will continue her journey in the way she would have wanted, living fully, loving deeply, and always making each other proud.
