She Lived Life at Full Volume

Aunty Phuong was the most incredibly caring person in our family’s life. The memories we have with her are all happy, full of her infectious laughter and bright smile.

“Sikh Yeh May?” and “Phuong Yee Bong” pronounced in Cantonese, are two frequent phrases tied to my memory of her that translate to “Did you eat yet?” and “Auntie will help”. She was always making sure we were well fed and always wanted to help us with anything. Growing up and until her very last moment, Phuong Yee “bong” (or helped) find me the best school dance dresses, wear makeup for the first time, talk to my school counselors, feel beautiful, drive me everywhere, fight less with my sister, navigate difficult conversations with my parents, and plan my future wedding. I wish I could tell her the impact that she has made on my life.

Aunty Phuong knew how to laugh her way through life, never taking things too seriously while maintaining heart and purity with everything she did. She was so patient, kind, and giving. She had love for everything around her. If Aunty Phuong had all the resources in the world, she would stop world hunger, adopt every foster child, and rescue every animal. This mentality radiated through her daily life, not only caring for her loved ones but also wanting to give back to those in need.

I will never forget her favorite meals she cooked for us: Banh Canh, Bun Bo Hue, Bobo Jook, and Chicken Rice. I will never forget all the trips she took me on: Disneyworld, Disneyland, cruises to the Bahamas and Mexico, and Hawaii a million times. I will try to live life at full volume just like she did embracing every present moment with excitement, love, and gratitude.
